ETHICS has decided to conduct a study with pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers to help its members to better understand:
- the issues and challenges of Ethics / Compliance functions;
- their positioning in organizations;
- the outlook for these functions in the years to come.
The proliferation of national and international regulations; the increasing risks impacting Healthcare industries; and the expectations of patients, health professionals and, more generally, of public opinion, have led to considerable development of Ethics / Compliance functions during the last decade.
However, the specifics of these new functions have not been formally defined, leading to differences, sometimes significant, in their roles and positioning from one company to another.
The remit of the Ethics / Compliance function can range from simply providing additional "tick box" and monitoring exercises to being a real "business partner" and strong player in the cultural and strategic evolution of the company. Whatever the differences, the Ethics and Compliance function has become is a major and indispensable function for the pharmaceutical and medical devices industries and beyond for all economic sectors.
The ongoing study, called “mirror”, was begun during the months of September and October 2015 by the consulting firm Day One and the Executive Search Firm Heidrick & Struggles.
A panel of CEOs (or multi-country / regional operational managers, members of Executive Committee) and senior managers (global or regional) of the Ethics / Compliance function from various leading international pharmaceutical and medical devices companies, have been interviewed by Olivier Chaduteau (Managing Partner of Day One) and Marc Bartel (France Managing Partner of Heidrick & Struggles in France) using an interview guide.
The interviews, lasting 45 to 60 minutes, were conducted in an independent and confidential manner. Only anonymous data and information have been aggregated and published in the study report.
The results from interviews conducted prior to the 2015 General Assembly were presented at the 2015 General Assembly on Tuesday 24 November. However, as this is an ongoing study the intention is to continue adding to the body of knowledge in this study. If you are interested in participating, please contact us. Further insights will be presented at the 2016 General Assembly on 29 and 30 September 2016.
Thank you very much in advance for your contribution to this important study.
